salt marshes

An unusual experience in Charente Maritime!

During your stay in Charente-Maritime, don't miss the opportunity to discover the salt marshes, located not far fromInspire Villages Marennes Oléron. This visit is an opportunity to discover the production process of salt, an emblematic product of the region.

The Marennes salt marshes have a rich and fascinating history, dating back to Roman times. This traditional practice is a key part of the local economy, and is still in operation today. During your visit, you'll see first-hand how seawater is pumped into the basins and how salt is harvested. You'll also learn about the history of this ancient practice and its importance to the region.

Discover three salt marshes near our open-air hotel:

  1. Marais salants de l'île d'Oléron: The Ile d'Oléron, just a few minutes from Inspire Villages marennes Oléron, is home to salt marshes, although they may not be as widely exploited as on the Ile de Ré.
  2. Marais salants de l'île de Ré: The island of Ré is famous for its salt marshes, which have been exploited for centuries. You can find salt marshes in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, Loix and Ars-en-Ré, among other places on the island.
  3. Seudre salt marshes: The Seudre is an estuary that runs through part of the Charente-Maritime region. Some salt marshes are located along this estuary, for example in the Marennes region, famous for its Marennes-Oléron oysters.

In addition to the educational aspect, a visit to the salt marshes offers breathtaking views of the Seudre estuary and surrounding islands. You can admire the region's natural beauty, while learning about a fascinating local tradition. It's the ideal way to discover the region in the great outdoors!
