On the banks of the Gironde estuary, the Cité de l'Huître invites you to follow an exciting discovery trail that will enable you to understand every aspect of oyster production. Right in the heart of Europe's largest oyster-ripening marsh, you'll discover the different species of oyster, their distinctive flavors and the techniques used to produce these highly prized shellfish.

La cité de l'huître is an experience for everyone! Young and old alike can learn the art of opening oysters in one of the on-site workshops, sample a warm oyster and discover all the secrets of oyster farming.

The Cité de l'huître is an ideal way to recharge your batteries in the fresh air, and invites you to discover the Marennes-Oléron region and its natural wonders. Take a stroll along the wildlife trails, or admire the exceptional landscapes along the site.

A visit punctuated by the exploration of four oyster huts:

  • The green hut to learn more about the history of oyster farming: old and new oyster farming tools and discover the tradition. 
  • The blue hut to discover the secrets of this shellfish through science: microscopes, models, puzzles, fossilized oysters... Activities for the whole family!
  • La cabane rouge will help you discover all the riches of the region and the marsh. Explore the Seudre marsh ecosystem and discover exceptional products.
  • Take a gourmet break at La Cabane Jaune and discover new recipes based on oysters. You'll be sure to impress your next guests with tasty new recipes. 

These themed cabins are self-guided, so you can build your own tour as you wish!

Other fun experiences can be enjoyed on site, depending on the schedule: creative workshops, large-screen projection, treasure hunts... A treat for the whole family.

Feeling hungry? You can discover the restaurant and its terrace to taste Marennes Oléron oysters. The restaurant also serves salads, hot dishes and ice creams. Open for lunch every day from Wednesday to Sunday, except during school vacations. And every day during vacation periods.

Last but not least, we particularly like the fact that bike hire is available at no extra charge! It's the perfect way to finish your visit, with a 3.5 km bike ride around the Seudre marshes! A word of advice: the marsh is home to some unusual flora and fauna, so don't forget your binoculars and camera!

How to get to the Cité de l'huître

From Inspire Villages Marennes Oléron, you're only 10 minutes away by car and 16 minutes by bike!

The Cité de l'Huître welcomes you from April 1st to the end of the All Saints' Day vacations.

  • Every day except Mondays and Tuesdays during school vacations: 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Every day during school vacations in all zones: 10:30 am to 7 pm (Spring and All Saints' Day)
  • Daily during summer vacation: 10am-7pm
